Martyn Moxon is hoping that his beloved Barnsley replicate his Yorkshire CCC team last year by salvaging a disappointing season and staying up in the final weeks.

The 57-year-old from Monk Bretton is a lifelong Reds fan as well as director of cricket at Headingley and has watched this season with interest as the Oakwell club was taken over by a consortium but the team have found themselves in a relegation fight. They are now third-bottom and five points adrift of safety.

Moxon said: "It's a bit of a nail-biting time. Hopefully we can pick up a few wins and stay up. Nobody wants to see their team relegated, and it will be a crucial few weeks. I am sure relegation was the last thing the new investors wanted when they bought the club. Hopefully we can stay up, have a really good summer with some new investment and possibly challenge next season."

Moxon is now working in the same city as Paul Heckingbottom who left his hometown club Barnsley to join Leeds United in January. Martyn said: "I've spent a bit of time with him over the years. It was difficult for him at Barnsley with him constantly having to sell players and rebuild the team. But he showed what he was capable of at Barnsley and how he could improve players.

"It would have been nice to see him keep the same squad for two or three years but maybe that is not realistic in football these days. It's been a difficult start for him at Leeds but I hope he is given time."
