Barnsley were beaten 3-0 at home to Aston Villa in front of the Sky Sports cameras on Saturday evening.

Villa took the lead through Albert Adomah after a mistake by Barnsley captain and goalkeeper Adam Davies then Adam Jackson conceded a penalty just before half-time which Adomah netted for his second of the game. Keinan Davis added a third early in the second half as the visitors cantered to a comfortable victory.

Paul Heckingbottom made just one change from the side that beat Derby County in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday, with the match-winner from that game, Adam Hammill, replacing Ryan Hedges. Villa had the first chance of the match when Robert Snodgrass' 20-yard shot brought a decent save out of Davies, diving low to his left.

But the home goalkeeper was at fault for the 17th-minute opener as, after a long ball drifted past both Adam Jackson and Jason McCarthy, it also squirmed under Davies and Adomah tapped into the empty net.

Davies then kept out a simple header from Davis after Snodgrass' cross but Barnsley eventually had their first real chance on 31 minutes when George Moncur's corner was flicked on by Liam Lindsay onto Matty Pearson and the ball trickled just wide.

The Reds were finishing the first half strongly but were hit with a suckerpunch when they conceded a 43rd-minute penalty. Lindsay  got caught under a long ball and Jackson lunged in on Davis, with the referee awarding the spot-kick which Adomah netted.Replays showed Jackson may have made minor contact with the ball but the referee and his assistant, who made the decision, did not appear to spot that.

Heckingbottom made two changes at half-time as Moncur and Harvey Barnes were replaced by Ike Ugbo and Ryan Hedges with the Reds changing from 4-1-4-1 to 4-4-2.

Villa made it 3-0 ten minutes into the second half when Davis headed Ahmed Elmohamady's right-wing cross towards the bottom left corner and Davies could not keep it out.

Hammill volleyed well over from 25 yards out then stood up a good cross which Ugbo headed straight at visiting goalkeeper Sam Johnstone when he should have scored. Ugbo then went clean through on goal in the 87th minute after collecting a brilliant backheel from Joe Williams and exchanging passes with fellow substitute Mamadou Thiam but the Chelsea loanee fired wide of the left post.
