Barnsley took an early lead but were beaten 3-1 at near neighbours Chesterfield on the opening day of the League One season on Saturday.

The Reds got the perfect start when debutant striker Conor Wilkinson put them ahead just four minutes into the game. But Jay O'Shea levelled just as early in the second half then two goals in two minutes put the Spireites in control.

The Reds took the lead when Dan Crowley broke from the halfway line then slipped a clever ball through to fellow summer loan signing Wilkinson who beat a man before lashing in with his left foot from 12 yards.

The home side almost levelled ten minutes later when Adam Davies made an excellent save to keep out Sam Hird's header.

Sam Winnall should have doubled the lead when he went clean through after a good exchange with Wilkinson but his finish with the outside of his left foot was weak and straight at home goalkeeper Tommy Lee.

Davies was called into action again to deny Gboly Ariyibi who beat two Barnsley men on the touchline in the box before shooting from a tight angle four yards out.

Another Reds debutant Marc Roberts then headed a great chance wide from an excellent Conor Hourihane free-kick.

Davies saved Barnsley again in first half injury-time when he tipped over a 25-yard shot from Dan Gardner then, from the resulting corner, kept out another close range effort by Hird.

O'Shea levelled on 49 minutes when he fired in from the right of the box after goos work from Sylvain Ebanks-Blake.

Alfie Mawson headed Winnall's cross onto the post seconds before Ebanks-Blake fired a glorious chance over from close range.

Ebanks-Blake eventually put the hosts in front from close range after a cross was headed down in the area then, less than a minute later, following a poor clearance by Barnsley substitute George Williams, Morsy curled in from the edge of the box to make it 3-1.
