Barnsley lost a lead in a 2-1 defeat at Derby County on Saturday and are 11 points off the Championship's top six with 11 games to play.

Matty James' first Reds goal put them ahead early in the second half but the hosts levelled instantly before netting the winner with a quarter of an hour to play.

Barnsley began each half well but County had the better chances overall and were well on top for large parts of the game. Derby leapfrogged the Reds who are now 11th.

Paul Heckingbottom made two changes from the side that drew with Huddersfield Town a week earlier. Adam Hammill replaced Ryan Kent on the left wing while midfielder Alex Mowatt was sacrificed for striker Tom Bradshaw as the Reds reverted from the 4-5-1 they mainly used against the Terriers to a 4-4-2.

The Reds began brightly with Adam Armstrong being put through by Bradshaw and Hammill but, with the angle very tight on both occasions, he sent the first effort across the face of goal then was denied by a simple save from Scott Carson.

The former England goalkeeper also saved low long-range efforts from Armstrong and Adam Hammill who were Barnsley's best attacking players in the early stages. The Rams came back into the match in the last 20 minutes of the second half.

Johnny Russell went clean through from the right wing but shot straight at Barnsley goalkeeper Adam Davies then Tom Ince and Matej Vydra curled efforts wide of the top left corner.

Barnsley took the lead seven minutes into the second half when James headed Marc Roberts' long throw into the bottom right corner. But the hosts were level two minutes later when Barnsley could not clear a cross and Tom Ince smashed in from close range.

Davies then did well to tip over long-range efforts from Ince and Russell while Vydra sent a header narrowly wide.

Heckingbottom brought off strikers Armstrong and Bradshaw for Kent and Mowatt but the Rams took the lead a minute later when David Nugent's effort was deflected into the bottom right corner.

Ince had efforts blocked by Angus MacDonald and his own player Bradley Johnson then Davies made an outstanding save to deny substitute Will Hughes from close range.

Mowatt saved off the line to stop County going 3-1 up then Kent came close twice as he fired over from the left side of the box then hit a powerful effort from the right which Carson repelled.
