Barnsley kicked off their pre-season with a 2-0 win at Stalybridge Celtic courtesy of second half goals from Adam Hammill and Jack Cowgill.

Paul Heckingbottom played different teams in each half to ensure all of his squad got a run-out across the Pennines.

The Reds fielded two of their five new signings in the first half alongside former Bradford City winger Dylan Mottley-Henry who is on trial.

Barnsley dominated the opening stages with new boys George Moncur and Elliot Lee both looking lively.

Lee had the first shot on goal from a free kick. Midfielder Josh Scowen showed great skill by gliding by several Stalybridge players before firing high and wide.

It was a disappointing first period from Heckingbottom's side who had Marc Roberts to thank for clearing Henoc Mukendi's effort off the line.

The Barnsley fans who made the trip got their first chance to see Andy Yiadom, Kayden Jackson and Stefan Payne in the second half.

The trio combined for the opening goal on 55 minutes. Yiadom's ball set Jackson away and he crossed for Payne whose goal-bound effort was handled by a Stalybridge defender.

Hammill sent Tony McMillan the wrong way.

Barnsley continued to threaten with Jackson being set away down the right but after rounding the 'keeper his shot went into the side netting.

Payne almost made it two when his shot was fumbled by the Stalybridge 'keeper and he went close again moments later.

They got the second with six minutes to play. Hammill's in-swinging cross was contested by central defender Cowgill and a Stalybridge defender and the slightest of flicks took it into the bottom corner.
