Barnsley have been relegated from the Championship following their 4-1 final day thrashing at Derby County and Bolton Wanderers' 3-2 comeback win over Nottingham Forest.

The Reds were outclassed at Pride Park, trailing 1-0 at the break then conceding a flurry of goals early in the second half before George Moncur's late consolation strike.

Meanwhile, Bolton trailed until they scored in the 87th and 88th minutes. A draw would have been enough to keep Barnsley in the Championship as Burton Albion lost at Preston.

Barnsley finished 22nd with 41 points from 46 matches and are back in League One after two years in the second tier. It was one of their worst performances of the season when and showed none of the fighting spirit there have been glimpses of in recent weeks.

Jose Morais kept exactly the same team that won 2-0 at home to Brentford eight days earlier as Barnsley went into the match knowing that victory would keep them up for certain while a draw or defeat might be good enough depending on Burton and Bolton's results.

Goalkeeper Jack Walton was tested early on by a long-range Marcus Olsson shot which he tipped over, but was beaten in the 14th minute.

Barnsley lost the ball high up the pitch and Derby counter-attacked with Bradley Johnson playing a through ball on the left wing which Cameron Jerome ran onto before speeding away from Andy Yiadom and smashing the ball into the top left corner.

Jerome thought he had made it 2-0 soon after when he turned the ball into the empty net after Richard Keogh hit the crossbar, but it was ruled out for a handball by the striker.

Derby had to make a change midway through the first half as Marcus Olsson, who had impressed as the left wing-back in a 3-5-2, came off injured and was replaced by Championship top-scorer Matej Vydra as the hosts changed to 4-4-2.

Very little happened until half-time, with Derby looking the more threatening while Barnsley's limited attacks led to a few shots being blocked and crosses whizzing across the home penalty area.

Derby again started well in the second half and doubled their lead in the 55th minute when Jerome powered past Liam Lindsay and crossed low for Vydra to tap in from close range.

Mamadou Thiam came on for Brad Potts and almost scored instantly but whistled a low shot wide from 20 yards.

It was 3-0 on 68 minutes when the visitors were again cut open and Vydra looped over a cross from the left and substitute David Nugent's header went in via Zeki Fryers who unsuccessfully tried to clear it off the line.

Nugent set up the fourth three minutes later with a good cross from the right which was turned in from ten yards out by Tom Lawrence with a good finish.

Moncur replaced Mahoney and scored his second goal of the season in the 80th minute when he curled a fine shot into the top right corner from outside the box.
