Barnsley concluded their pre-season preparations with a 2-0 win at Peterborough.

Josh Scowen netted the opener in the opening blows before Stefan Payne sealed the victory in the final minute as Paul Heckingbottom fine tuned his side to face Ipswich Town on the opening day of the season.

Ryan Kent, a loan signing from Liverpool, made his Barnsley debut and showed some neat touches as Barnsley finished their friendlies with a win.

The Reds had the opening chances with Tom Bradshaw  firing into the side netting  after being played in by Andy Yiadom and then Adam Hammill shot wide after cutting in from the left flank.

They went ahead on seven minutes when Scowen rose highest to flick Hammill’s freekick into the top corner.

Peterborough had their chances to equalise with Gwion Edwards forcing a good save out of Townsend and Paul Taylor curling an effort from the edge of the box just over.

Taylor almost levelled before the break but his shot from a short corner cannoned off the bar and away to safety.

Townsend pulled off a great diving save early in the second half to tip wide Shaquille Coulthirst’s long-range effort.

Marley Watkins replaced Bradshaw just after the hour mark and helped create the next chance for the visitors.

Hammill played a one-two with the Welshman and then set Sam Winnall through on goal but the striker sliced his chance into the stand.

Townsend continued to impress in goal and denied substitute Tom Nichols a chance at the back post with a brave diving save.

The win was sealed in the closing stages by substitute Payne who headed in Yiadom’s cross.
