Barnsley have sold captain Angus MacDonald to fellow Championship relegation-fighters Hull City.

Hull – who are currently 21st in the Championship, two places and a point behind Barnsley – have signed the centre-back on a two-and-a-half year contract for an undisclosed fee.

The 25-year-old was given the skipper's armband after excelling last season following his signing from non-league Torquay United. But he has started just ten of the Reds' 29 league games this season due to a combination of poor form, suspension, injuries, illness and an iron deficiency for which he is receiving treatment.

MacDonald's departure leaves Liam Lindsay and Matty Pearson as the only fit centre-backs at Oakwell, after Ethan Pinnock and Adam Jackson both sustained injuries last week.

Barnsley are hoping to replace MacDonald with Nottingham Forest's 31-year-old Matt Mills, who is out of contract in the summer.   With the January transfer window set to close at 11pm, the deal could either be a loan until the end of the season or a permanent contract for the same period.

Two overseas central midfielders have been in Oakwell today for medicals with permanent deals close to being announced for Austrian Christoph Knasmullner and Frenchman Thomas Ephestian.

The Reds have been in negotiations with Oxford United over a fee for goalkeeper Simon Eastwood while they are looking another striker, with Swansea's Oliver McBurnie and 2016 Reds promotion hero Ashley Fletcher among their targets.
