PLAYERS from Barnsley FC visited Barnsley Hospice to meet patients and staff and spread some festive cheer.

Patients were given the opportunity to speak to players and staff and teach the team about the work that goes on at the hospice.

Andreas Winkler, Barnsley FC assistant head coach said it is important for the players to be a part of the community and be involved with residents and patients.

He said: “They want to show Barnsley that they are part of the fabric of the community. It is important for myself and the players to visit people who are in a less fortunate position than we are and spread some joy.”

Adam Jackson, defender, and Brad Potts, midfielder, said the experience made them appreciate what they have.

They said: “Obviously these patients aren’t in the best position and it’s important with us being in the position we are in to put a smile on their face.”

The patients were really “chuffed” to see the team and a few gave some tips for the current season.

Husband and wife, Tony Caves, 74 and wife Margaret Caves, 76 were especially pleased as they are lifelong Barnsley fans.

Tony said: “I was really chuffed when I saw them come through the doors. I have been a fan my whole life and it was great to meet them.”

Tony said he’d lost a £5 bet on the match against Sunderland last week, and gave the players some tips. He said: “I gave them a rollicking when I saw them because I lost my £5 bet. It was a lovely surprise to meet the team. I just want them to know that we’re going up, and I don’t want any more silly mistakes.”

The team spent about an hour with the patients and took the time to ask the hospice questions about the work that they do. They also dropped off Christmas gifts and posed for pictures with patients who were big fans.

Simon Atkinson, corporate fundraiser for Barnsley Hospice, said: “We really appreciate the team giving up their time to visit us especially as it is a busy time of year. Unfortunately this year we were unable to let the team visit the inpatients as they are just too poorly. We work really hard to make sure the hospice is a home from home and having the team visit really put a smile on the patients faces.

“It’s been a pleasure to have them here and we hope it was just as nice for them to be able to spread some Christmas cheer.”
