Barnsley's staff and players are due to return to Oakwell on Monday for pre-season training.

Many of the coaches and squad are still on holiday but are due back in the coming days before fitness testing begins next week.

Head coach Daniel Stendel will then have ten days working with his newly-promoted players – as well as new signing Luke Thomas – before the first friendly of the summer at Stalybridge Celtic on July 3. The Wednesday night fixture will see the Reds visit Bower Fold, whose hosts finished 17th in the seventh tier Evo-Stik Premier League last season.

Barnsley won at Stalybridge in their opening pre-season game in the summers of 2015 and 2016. Following that match, the Reds are then hoping for a week of warm weather training overseas, with Nice in France a possible destination, but that is yet to be confirmed.

They will then travel to Stendel’s home nation of Germany in mid-July. They have a friendly confirmed at Bundesliga 2 club Arminia Bielefeld on Saturday, July 20 but are hoping to play another game on the same trip.

They then return to the UK to face newly-promoted Premier League club Sheffield United in a local derby on July 27. The Championship season is scheduled to begin a week later.
