Barnsley jumped out of the relegation with vital 2-0 victory over Brentford in their final home game of the season.

The Reds scored early in both halves through Kieffer Moore's lucky opener and another Oliver McBurnie strike.

It was a perfect day for Barnsley as Burton Albion beat Bolton Wanders who dropped below the Brewers and the Reds to second bottom. The two sides above the Oakwell club also lost with Birmingham City going down 2-1 at QPR and Reading losing 2-0 at home to Ipswich Town.

Jose Morais' men are 21st with 41 points, ahead of Burton on goal difference and a point clear of Bolton while they are two points behind Birmingham City and Reading.

Jose Morais made four changes from the side that lost 3-0 at Nottingham Forest on Tuesday. He brought full-backs Andy Yiadom and Zeki Fryers back into the side after resting them in midweek, with Dimitri Cavare and Daniel Pinillos dropping out. Connor Mahoney came in for George Moncur and Adam Jackson, who had been struggling with injury in the build-up, was replaced by Ethan Pinnock. Brentford dominated the opening minutes, with Barnsley totally penned into their own half, but all they managed was a shot from Romaine Sawyers which looped into the arms of goalkeeper Jack Walton on his home debut. Andy Yiadom also produced a fine last-ditch tackle on Sergi Canos after Sawyers played him in in the box. The Reds went ahead with their first attack as Moore crossed from the left wing and it floated into the top right corner via the right post. It was clearly a fluke goal but a fantastic start for the hosts. Moore almost made it 2-0 when Mahoney’s cross was met by a diving header but he sent it wide. Brentford struggled to respond from going behind with their only effort before the break being a low 20-yard shot which went wide of the right post.  The Reds did make it 2-0 five minutes into the second half when Adam Hammill’s left-wing corner was headed in by McBurnie for his ninth goal in as many games which makes him joint top-scorer with Tom Bradshaw for league goals. Moore then missed two golden chances to make it three. Firstly he fired wide from six yards out with the goal unguarded after ‘keeper Daniel Bentley made a low save from a shot by Mahoney who had brilliantly cut in from the right wing. Moore was then put through on goal by a fine pass from Hammill but shot wide of the bottom right corner from the left of the area. Hammill had a couple of efforts, including one he scuffed wide in the penalty area after brilliantly beating two defenders. Brad Potts also fired off-target from distance as did Brentford’s Florian Jozefzoon and Yoann Barbet. Walton easily held a 30-yard effort from Chris Mepham and, despite Brentford having plenty of possession near the Reds goal, they struggled to break through a resilient home defence and were deservedly beaten.
