Barnsley will play League Two Carlisle United in the first round of the EFL Cup on August 13.
It will be the first meeting of the two clubs since 1986 while the Reds have won just two of their last 14 matches against the Cumbrians.
Steven Pressley's side came tenth in the fourth division last season, and have former Reds midfielder Kelvin Etuhu.
The Reds were knocked out in the first round of the cup last year, losing 3-1 at Blackpool.
