Barnsley’s players are ‘very disappointed’ after their last-gasp loss at Premier League Burnley in the FA Cup but Daniel Stendel insists they can take a lot of confidence into their League One promotion push.

The Reds were defeated thanks to a 92nd-minute penalty by their former striker Chris Wood following a foul by centre-back Liam Lindsay.

Head coach Stendel said: “I hope the players can take confidence from the performance but, at the moment, they are very disappointed. They will have a few days off now to relax after playing a lot of games in a few weeks and they will be back in training on Wednesday.

“Our performance was good. We had some good combinations and some chances. In the last 20 minutes, no one in the stadium would think we would lose this game. I am very disappointed at the moment for Liam and for all of us.

“We can play better than a team in League One and Burnley was not so good today, so that was the reason that we had a chance for a replay but, in the end, we drop out of the cup and now we concentrate only on League One.”

Lindsay played well but slid in on Matej Vydra for the late spot-kick when wide on the left of the box.  Stendel said: “Normally Liam would not tackle in this situation. If he had only run with the player and blocked the ball off, we would have a replay. He knows himself and he is the most disappointed in the dressing room. It is an experience, not the best experience, but I hope he learns from this in the future. He is a very good centre-back as he showed in this game and lots of games.”

Lindsay was defended by his centre-back partner Ethan Pinnock who said: “He can take a lot of positives from his performance. The penalty was a tricky one because he wasn’t trying to make a tackle. He thought the striker was going to shoot and he was trying to block it but he got a bit too far across. He knows he’s done well and we just have to lift him and get him ready for the next game.”

It was the second penalty awarded in the match after Dimitri Cavare was judged by Simon Hooper to have fouled Vydra before the video assistant refereeing overturned it for offside. Stendel said: “I thought it was offside and it was a good decision for us. I know VAR from the Bundesliga in Germany. It’s good that the time between the foul and the decision was not so long.”

Stendel praised the 2,500 fans who travelled to Turf Moor to watch the game in a sold-out away end. He said: “We have had experience of the fans like this in the last month. They support us in every game and a lot of people come to away games. All the tickets were bought very quickly which is a big thing for us. The team on the pitch showed a good performance and it is the main point for the good relationship between the team and the supporters.”

Pinnock added: “We gave a good account of ourselves, played some really good stuff in passages and we were unfortunate to concede right at the end. We thought he had done enough to earn a replay and we didn’t look at of place. Everyone was really relaxed and comfortable on the ball. We had a few shots and Cam (McGeehan) had an offside goal so, on another day, we could have had the lead.”
