Barnsley are hoping to make permanent as many of their short-term deals and loans as possible in the coming months, says head coach Lee Johnson.

The Reds boss has suggested he would be open to extending the contract of right-back Reece Wabara – which runs out on December 31 – while he would also like to retain loan stars such as Ben Pearson on a permanent basis.

Johnson told the Chronicle: "We will always do contract negotiations in house but it is fair to say that Reece has done well and we have enjoyed having him here. We will let it run a couple of weeks and then sit down with him and see what he wants to do."

Wabara added: "I just want to keep improving and this is the place to do that. I have loved every second so far."

Chief executive Ben Mansford told the Chronicle: "If Reece keeps performing like he has been, then myself and Lee will sit down in the next two to four weeks and discuss his future.

"We are planning for the next two windows. We have identified what we need in January and next summer and we are looking at which players could fill those roles. The signings of the likes of Alfie Mawson, Marc Roberts and Josh Scowen were six to 12-month missions. Now we have new missions, but we are aware that we will already have a very good nucleus of a squad next summer because of the work we have already done."

Winger Kadeem Harris, 22, has made seven appearances since joining on a 93-day loan from Cardiff City which expires on November 21. The Reds cannot extend the deal until January and, while a new loan is possible, Cardiff boss Russell Slade is understood to have long-term plans for Harris.

The Reds are extremely unlikely to get Arsenal's highly-rated loanee Dan Crowley, 18, on a permanent basis but they are interested in turning fellow midfielder Ben Pearson's loan spell from Manchester United into a permanent deal. Pearson, 20, has played 33 games for the Reds during two loan spells, the latest of which runs out in January.

Barnsley agreed fees for strikers Michael Smith, 23, and Conor Wilkinson, 20, before taking them on loan until January from Swindon and Bolton. But they are both currently struggling to find a starting place in the team. The other loan player is Joe Rothwell, 20, who is at Oakwell from Manchester United until January like Pearson.

Johnson said: "We would like to keep all our loans if we could but it's never definite. We are planning all the time but we won't get too ahead of ourselves."
