FIRE and rescue crews ran an exercise simulating a response to ‘unknown hazardous material’ at Elsecar Heritage Centre.

The crews from Barnsley District Command Team donned breathing apparatus and protective clothing to undergo drills that mimicked a chemical contamination and various scenarios.

A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said: “Realistic training of this type allows us to take part in training scenarios that prepare us for actual incidents in the future.

“This is the second exercise South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue has undertaken at the site and other scenarios are being planned to allow crews to train in a realistic environment with personnel at the railway site.

“Elsecar Heritage Centre staff played a key role providing a realistic venue and staff who volunteered to take part.”
