A PILOT scheme offering free underfloor insulation to Barnsley residents has been launched.

The council, in partnership with insulation provider Miller Pattison, is running the scheme for privately owned or rented properties in Worsbrough providing free insulation to those with an accessible cellar by suspending it under the floorboards of the ground floor.

Coun Roy Miller, cabinet spokesperson for place, said: “Barnsley has a lot of terraced houses with low energy efficiency levels. While a new boiler or loft insulation can help, draughts from cellars are a problem in a lot of older houses. These drafts rising through floorboards can really make homes feel cold during the winter months.

“The work isn’t disruptive and can be carried out quickly. Once completed it will deliver instant benefits, helping residents to reduce energy bills and keep homes warmer.”

Funding is available for a limited time on a first-come, first served basis. If the pilot scheme is successful, it will be rolled out to homes across the borough.
