FRUSTRATED residents went out into the night with plastic tie wraps ready to perform a citizens’ arrest after a spate of thefts of alloy wheels from cars.

Residents of an estate off Doncaster Road, Measbrough Dike, joined forces complaining of numerous vehicle crime incidents over the last week or so. Police did not attend so a Facebook group was hastily formed this week for people to share information and CCTV footage hoping to catch the thief themselves.

More than 60 people joined within a few hours.

They quickly gathered information about possible addresses and vehicles belonging to a suspected thief.

They formed a ‘night watch’ as they waited expecting the thief to strike again and were ready and waiting on Tuesday night when a suspect began removing another set of wheels from a car in Barberry Court.

“We didn’t want to disturb him so we waited inside,” said Ben Polius, whose alloy wheels worth £3,500 were stolen from his Mercedes just down the road on Saturday night.
