RESIDENTS say they want to know what is happening about plans for the former Kings Road School site, amid concerns it is an eyesore and dangerous.

The Wombwell school closed in 2005 and has since been demolished, but local people claim the site is unsecured and easily accessible to children.

Plans for 29 houses were submitted by Sheldale Developments in November 2012 but never approved by Barnsley Council.

Coun Dick Wraith confirmed the company had bought the land from the council but officers have since been unable to contact the firm to get more information.

A council spokesman said: "The council can confirm this is a live planning application.

"The planning service awaits receipt, from the agent acting on behalf of the applicant, of viability assessments for affordable housing and open space, which would form part of the development.

"The council is also liaising with the agent who has confirmed they will bring to the attention of the landowner the concerns of residents regarding site security, so that these may be resolved as quickly as possible."

Residents say the site looks a mess, with overgrown vgetation is overgrown and there piles of rubble from a collapsed wall. They fear youngsters playing in the area may injure themselves.

The Chronicle has tried to contact Sheldale Developments but the phone number was dead and an architect who had been working on the project said he was also unable to contact them.
