A TENANT went to bed without realising a car had ploughed into the living room of his home.

Paul Cooper and his son, Adam, live at the terraced property at Stonyford Road, Wombwell, but both were out when the crash happened at 2.15am last Sunday.

Paul came in later through the back door and went straight upstairs without noticing the gaping hole in his living room.

It was only the following morning that he got up and noticed the damage. The car had crashed into the room at the front of the house, which is on the corner of Stonyford Road and Ings Road, but the driver drove off, leaving the damage.

Son Adam said it was only when his dad went into the living room the following morning he realised what had happened.

Adam, 20, said: “I wasn’t in the house at the time, I was dog-sitting at my cousin’s. It wasn’t until ten to nine Sunday morning when I had a load of missed calls that I found out what had happened.

“There was brickwork all over the living room. He pretty much woke up and found it. When he got home it was dark and he wasn’t paying much attention.”

Adam said they had been living there for two years.

“This is the first time we have had a crash but I think there has been a couple of others in the past.

“Honestly it is a bad corner. Not everyone takes it at speed but there are some chavs and boy racers who go flying round there and don’t realise how sharp it is.”

Adam’s grandma Janet lives on nearby Ings Road.

She said: “They are lucky they weren’t in because where the car has hit is where the sofa is. It is a real mess.”

Ward councillor Pauline Markham said that stretch of road, running from The Fishing Republic tackle shop to the corner where the crash occurred, is a notorious hotspot for accidents and near misses.

She said: “They come tearing down the road and straight at cars coming from the other direction. We have had speed cameras previously further along to try and tackle the speeding but I haven’t known them to be in place for quite a while.

“A lamp post on there is still out of shape which is a sign of another accident and it has still not been properly erected.

“I have been a councillor for eight years in May and for all that time it has been a problem on there. But no one can get anything done about it, other than catching a few speeders. I don’t really know what else could be done to resolve it apart from catching people speeding.”

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “At around 2.15am on February 18 it was reported damage had been caused to the wall of a property on Stonyford Road, Wombwell, Barnsley.

“Anyone with information is asked to report it via 101 quoting incident number 122 of February 18.”
