A LOCAL restaurant is continuing to donate meals to frontline staff at Barnsley Hospital - despite the closure of their business.

Alam’s Lounge in Higham have been making meals and donating them to NHS staff for the past two weeks, with 200 meals being handed over last Friday.

Abbey Khan, manager at the Indian restaurant, told the Chronicle: “We decided that we want to do it to help out the people in the area, especially those who are working tirelessly at the NHS.

“If everyone was to just do their little bit, then we could all come out of this stronger.

“I live in Sheffield, but Barnsley is like my second home - I just want to give something back.”

With the strict guidelines set out by the government set to continue, nurses and the workforce at the NHS will be working long hours to help the people of the borough.

In turn, this leaves them vulnerable to a lack of food supplies at supermarkets across the region, something Abbey feels strongly about.

“They’re working all day to help us and then they go to the supermarket and there’s no food for them to buy, that’s why we’re doing this,” he added.

“We’re legally allowed to still operate as a takeaway, but we made the decision to close the restaurant entirely so we could focus on helping others.

“This is a time for everyone to help, there are other restaurants in the area that are able to, and I hope in time that we are all able to support the wonderful work that our key workers do.”
