A REVISED masterplan for the £50m Better Barnsley project has been unveiled.

It includes a large multiplex cinema, a huge food hall within the refurbished indoor market, the new town square, shops and restaurants.

“The original principles of the Better Barnsley scheme remain the same, with the markets at the heart of the project in the refurbished Metropolitan Centre, surrounded by new retail, leisure and restaurant units with a new public square,” a Barnsley Council spokesman said.

The council insists the modified plan is designed to ensure the project is ‘as financially viable as possible’ and attractive to the investment market.

The multiplex cinema will be on the first floor of a new building at the side of the new town square and Kendray Street with retail units occupying the ground floor level.
