A MYSTERY man is offering a £1,000 reward to catch a criminal who stabbed a horse in the stomach and left it for dead.

Tilly, a seven-year-old grey Connemara mare, was in a field on Sunday opposite Skiers Hall Lane in Elsecar when the incident happened. She was with three other horses all belonging to her co-owner Michelle Steeples.

Tilly suffered what appeared to be a single stab wound four to five centimetres long between her groin and stomach. It is believed whatever happened occurred between 2.30am and a dog walker finding her at 6.40am.

Just four months ago, a six-year-old mare Molly had to be put down after she was found brain damaged in her field next to Birdwell roundabout. Vets believed she had been beaten with a blunt instrument.
