FUNDING for road safety work in South Yorkshire has been slashed by more than half in the last eight years as the county’s four councils have been hit by austerity cuts, it has emerged.

Sheffield Council has released a report which shows funding for the South Yorkshire Safety Cameras organisation has been reduced by 59 per cent as local authorities have sought to balance their books in response to severe cuts in annual government grants.

The latest contribution from Sheffield Council is just over £144,000, double the contribution made by Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster Councils.

Road safety charity Brake says the loss of investment is a ‘concern’.
