A brace from former Barnsley striker Danny Rose secured a 3-1 win for Mansfield Town in the first round of the FA Cup against non-league outfit Shaw Lane AFC who hosted the biggest game in their history.

Evo-Stik Premier League side Shaw Lane, who were a Sunday League side until 2011 before a run of five promotions in six years, took on the League Two Stags who were 60 places ahead of them in the league structure.

Mansfield went ahead on 33 minutes but Lee Bennett, from Grimethorpe, levelled with a famous goal for his club then hit the post with another shot before the break. Former Barnsley midfielder Jacob Mellis then saw his second half penalty saved by Ducks goalkeeper Jon Stewart. But Mellis' former Oakwell colleague Rose headed in for 2-1 on 72 minutes then added a superb overhead kick soon after.

It was a brave effort from the part-time home side, who matched their full-time hosts for 70 minutes, but Rose's quality and the Stags' superior fitness saw them secure the win.

The visitors had several former Barnsley FC players in their line-up and two of them came close in the first move early on as Kane Hemmings went clean through after Ducks defender Kelvin Lugsden missed a long ball. Hemmings' shot was saved by Stewart then Rose hit the post with the rebound from a tight angle.

The Ducks had a great chance to take the lead when, after a good move in the 25th minute, left-back Ryan Serrant went through on the left of the box but his tame effort was easily saved by Conrad Logan.

The visitors eventually took the lead after 33 minutes when a clever free-kick routine led to Alex MacDonald's low cross which was blocked and centre-back Krystian Pearce hooked into the bottom left corner from ten yards out. Nicky Walker attempted to level for the hosts as he had a shot blocked in the Mansfield box then sent a header wide.

The equaliser came on 41 minutes. Paul Clayton blocked a clearance then Alex Byrne crossed in from the right with Walker then passing to Bennett whose initial back heel was blocked before he smashed the rebound into the bottom left corner from close range.

Serrant, who had been suffering with injury in the build-up, was taken off just before the break and replaced by winger Billy Whitehouse with former Barnsley defender Neil Austin moving from the right of the back four to the left and Byrne dropping back from the wing to right-back.

Bennett then almost put the home side ahead on the stroke of half-time when a free-kick fell to him ten yards out and his low shot hit the right post.

Mansfeld nearly went 2-1 up a minute into the second half when Hemmings was put clean through by Rose but Stewart rushed to the edge of his box to make a good block. Byrne then curled a 25-yard free-kick just over Logan's crossbar.

The Stags had the perfect chance to take the lead midway through the second half when Mellis was fouled in the box by substitute Whitehouse. But Stewart brilliantly dived to his right to turn it behind his goal.

It was another former Barnsley player who eventually put the visitors 2-1 up on 72 minutes as Rose beat Stewart with an excellent header from a left-wing cross by Malvind Bennett. Rose made it 3-1 six minutes later with an excellent overhead kick from Alex MacDonald's right-wing cross.
