A ROW has broken out between a Rotherham councillor and Barnsley Council over the new residents-only permit scheme for Barnsley’s dump-it sites.

It came to light yesterday that a senior Rotherham councillor has sent a letter to Barnsley’s cabinet spokesman Coun Roy Miller about the new rules restricting the use of the borough’s household waste recycling sites.

The scheme was given the go ahead last month and bans anyone who is not a Barnsley resident from using the borough’s four sites in Worsbrough, Smithies, Goldthorpe and Penistone.

The letter, from Coun Emma Hoddinott, an advisory cabinet member for waste, roads and community safety at Rotherham, says the residents-only permit scheme will have a ‘detrimental impact’ on those residents who live on the Rotherham / Barnsley border.

It also comes with a stern warning that it could increase the scourge of fly-tipping and cause problems with the joint waste partnership in place between Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster.
