Oliver Rowland is hoping to be involved in Formula One 'in some capacity' next season after ending the current Formula Two campaign, which he says has been the best of his career, over the next three days.

The 25-year-old from Penistone is currently in Abu Dhabi for the final race of the 2017 F2 series, in which he is second after wins at two of the ten stages so far. This season he has been the development driver for Formula One team Renault, who he has worked with for several years, but he is now looking to be more involved at the top level next year, most likely as a 'test' driver which is the back-up for a team's main two competitors.

Rowland told the Chronicle: "At the moment I have no idea what I will be doing next year. We're talking to lots of different teams at different levels but hopefully I will be involved in Formula One in some capacity. There is only one racing seat left in F1 so I may not get that but there might be other opportunities for me.

"My ultimate goal is to drive in F1 and hopefully I will get a step closer in 2018. I should know what I am doing in the next couple of weeks. I am not sure if what happens in Abu Dhabi will change anyone's mind but going there and winning certainly wouldn't do me any harm and you are only as good as your last race."

Rowland is unable to close the 60-point gap on F2 champion Charles Leclerc, while he could finish as low as fifth depending on results. His team DAMS Racing, who he spent last week working with at their Paris base, could win the constructors' championship as they are currently second – just two points behind the current leaders.

"I am happy with my performance over the season, it's probably been the best of my career. I have been pretty unlucky. We had a gearbox problem in Baku, a 22-second penalty at Silverstone, I was disqualified in Spain and my wheel fell off in Monza. If luck had been on my side I think I would have gone into this weekend still fighting for the title.

"In some ways I am proud of what we have achieved but I was in it to win it, so now I can't, it is disappointing and I am annoyed about it. I am going there to win the race and win the team championship as well.

"The team have done some good work with the car and made a lot of progress. We've been working hard on our qualifying plans because that has let us down this season. We seem to have found something extra and hopefully that shows over the weekend.

"It's a good course in Abu Dhabi. The first part is very flat and fast then the second section is a street circuit like Monaco and it's tight and twisty."It should be an interesting one."

Rowland spent this weekend back in Barnsley, where he has a house in Dodworth. He has returned regularly in the seven weeks since the last race. He said: "I have been working with my karting team Oliver Rowland Racing which is based in Northampton. But I have been up in Barnsley a lot as well to see my mum and brother.

"I went out for dinner with my grandma, who also lives in Barnsley near the hospital, for the first time in about three years. I usually don't get the chance to do that because I am so busy with training and testing and going all over the world for racing."
