PRINCESS Alexandra presented a Royal Humane Society Award to ‘Everest hero’ Les Binns at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday.

Les, from Manvers, saved the life of a stranger on the world’s highest mountain last year, abandoning his own lifelong dream to reach the summit.

He was granted the society’s silver medal, the first to be awarded for four years, which was presented to him by Princess Alexandra, the Queen’s cousin, who is president of the society.

“It was an absolutely fantastic day,” said Les. “I took my mrs and my mum along, and it was a massive honour.”

The Royal Humane Society is a charity that grants awards for acts of bravery in the saving of human life.
