‘STEPS in the right direction’ are being taken to improve a crime hotspot in Royston - but police patrols will continue for another eight weeks.

A joint operation between South Yorkshire Police and Barnsley Council has been ongoing on Milgate Street since last June after crime figures rose by 50 per cent from the previous year’s figures.

The spike, which saw complaints about the street’s problems with antisocial behaviour, absentee landlords and fly-tipping, prompted action to be taken and police patrols have been a priority for the Barnsley East Local Policing Team (LPT) and Jeanette Millward, the North East Area Council’s private housing officer, who has conducted clean-up days to address the street’s litter issues.

According to latest police figures, there has been 22 incidents since December 20, which represents a slight rise from the previous eight weeks’ statistics when just 11 were reported.
