AN OUTCRY for the RSPCA to step in to prevent more horses from dying has been made - after five lost their lives in as many months at a site in Cubley.

Horse owners have flooded social media this week after locals who have been keeping an eye on the field where the horses are kept, off Mortimer Road, went public with their concerns.

According to nearby residents, the last to die was a foal last Thursday.

One person, who did not wish to be named, has taken photos of the stricken animals and claims four more have died since last autumn.

“It has been reported multiple times but they’re still there. The conditions aren’t good and everyone who has expressed concerns is worried that more will die.

“As far as I am aware the field is rented out. There is a shelter, but there are around eight horses so it’s not sufficient.

“Everyone’s keeping an eye on it in the hope that someone steps in and takes action. The RSPCA are aware of multiple complaints about this site.”

It is not known who owns the horses, although a spokesperson from the RSPCA told the Chronicle the animal welfare organisation could not discuss the case due to legal reasons.

“Unfortunately we are unable to discuss complaints about specific people and what action may have been taken,” they said.

“We understand how frustrating that is for animals lovers but releasing information could prejudice a future prosecution or could lead to us being fined.

“We are so grateful to people who report suspected animal suffering to us and we would like to reassure people we will always look into and, if necessary, investigate any complaints made to us about animal welfare.

“A lot of the time issues will be dealt with by advice and education and it is not always appropriate to publicise this information for legal reasons.”
