‘DOZENS’ of cats have been removed from a property in Shafton by the RSPCA.

The operation took place last Wednesday on High Street and officers from the animal charity took away between 50 and 100 cats, according to eyewitnesses.

When visited by the Chronicle, the man who lives in the house said he had been ‘overrun’ by cats and it had got ‘out of control’.

One neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said: “There were several vans from the RSPCA at the house for an hour or so last Wednesday.

“They brought dozens of cats out. It’s hard to say if they were dead or alive because they were carried out in bags, but I’d estimate there was between 50 and 100 taken away.”

An RSPCA spokesman said they could not confirm how many cats were rescued, but thanked the public for reporting incidents.

“We are so grateful to people who report suspected animal suffering to us and we would like to reassure people we will always look into and, if necessary, investigate any complaints made to us about animal welfare,” she said.

“Unfortunately we are unable to discuss complaints about specific people and what action may have been taken. We understand how frustrating that is for animals lovers but releasing information could prejudice a future prosecution or could lead to us being fined.

“A lot of the time issues will be dealt with by advice and education and it is not always appropriate to publicise this information for legal reasons.”
