GENEROUS Barnsley folk came up trumps for a project helping people sleeping rough on the town’s streets this winter.

The idea behind the Rucksack Project is simple - it provides people with rucksacks packed with useful items like sleeping bags, warm coats, thick socks and clean underwear to make the plummeting temperatures of winter that little bit more bearable.

Organiser Adie Flute made an appeal in the Chronicle for local businesses to come forward and act as drop-off points for public donations for the project, which has just marked its third year working alongside Barnsley Churches Drop-in Project on John Street.

Adie said it had an overwhelming response from the public and was able to hand out about 120 rucksacks and a further 20 were sent to the Holden House shelter for staff there to hand out.
