Ryan Williams is hoping his spell at Barnsley puts him into the Australian squad for the Asian Cup in January and back in contention for parent club Fulham.

The 20-year-old, who is more than halfway through a month's loan at Oakwell, turned down the opportunity to play for Australia's under 23s in this current international break in order to focus on impressing for the Reds.

"Hopefully I can skip the under 23s and go straight into the senior Socceroos team," said Williams, who impressed on loan at League Two Oxford last season.

"It would be massive honour to play for my country and I am dying to do it.  That's part of the reason that I came to Barnsley. Massimo Luongo at Swindon and Bailey Wright at Preston have been called up for Australia while playing in League One. If I am playing here week in, week out then I've got a chance.

"I just missed out on this month's full camp so that's the first time I have got close.  My goal is to play in the Asian Cup in Australia in January."

Williams' other aim is to get back into the Fulham side. He started two games and came on once as a substitute for the London club under Felix Magath at the start of the season but the sacked German's replacement Kit Symons has not played him.

"I don't want to sit and wait to play at Fulham. I would rather play games on loan.  We'll see what happens after the month. The goal is to eventually play for Fulham but I would be open to staying at Barnsley a bit longer to help my development."

Speedy Williams – a former junior athletics champion in Australia – has been to Oakwell before to watch his older brother Rhys play for Middlesbrough. He is happy to be back.

"I like it at Barnsley. All the staff and players are really friendly. I feel a part of the club. We are a young, talented team and we're getting better every game."
