PLANS to convert the Stairfoot B and Q store into a Sainsbury's supermarket creating up to 400 jobs are set to be approved by the council on Tuesday.

The plans go before the planning committee and have been recommended to approval by officers.

Plans include a new internal mezzanine floor for a customer cafe and toilets, a new entrance lobby, customer lifts and ATMs along the shop front, removal of the builders' yard and garden centre to create more car parking.

A report reveals three letters of objection have been submitted, but 20 have been sent by residents in support of the plan.

The three objections include one on behalf of Tesco, and one on behalf of Peel Holdings, which is looking to develop a new store off Old Mill Lane near Asda.

The report says the proposal would represent a 'significant investment creating more than 400 jobs and preventing the site from becoming vacant and run down'.

B and Q has said it no longer has need of the store due to it being so close to its Cortonwood Retail Park store.
