ARTHUR Scargill’s purchase of a £2m council flat in London’s Barbican complex for just over £1m has shocked his former union which is still paying towards the upkeep of his Barnsley home.

NUM Yorkshire area chairman Chris Skidmore said he only found out last Friday that Mr Scargill, 78, had purchased the London three-bedroom property back in 2014.

Details of the sale were revealed in national newspaper reports at the weekend which branded Mr Scargill a ‘hypocrite’. The Socialist Labour Party, which he set up in the 1990s, calls for an end to the transfer of public housing stock into the private sector.

The Chronicle tried to contact Mr Scargill this week but he did not respond to the request to tell his side of the story.
