A WOMBWELL primary school which has helped give a little girl with a rare genetic condition a 'wonderful start' in education has been nominated for a Proud of Barnsley award.

High View Primary, on Newsome Avenue, has been nominated for school of the year by Rachel Mansell, whose daughter Annie is a pupil there.

Annie, five, of Neville Close Wombwell, suffers from Tetrasomy X, a chromosome disorder which is caused by having four copies of the X chromosome instead of two.

It means she suffers from hypermobile joints and muscle weakness and is often very tired.

She was also born with a cleft soft palate, meaning development of her communication skills have been delayed.

In her nomination, Rachel, 39, said the school had brilliant at helping Annie remain in mainstream education.

"High View has been excellent at working at Annie's pace so she was happy with school and able to cope with the long tiring days.

"Something that is really touching is the way they always make sure that Annie is not left out when there are treats or food-related activities, which isn't always easy given her allergy to milk proteins.

"Annie has a complex needs but High View really has made mainstream school work for her."
