PUPILS from two Barnsley primary schools were given a taste of European football when they won tickets to attend the UEFA Under 17s European semi-final.

Year six pupils from Worsbrough Bank End and Hunningley Primary were at the match at Rotherham FC’s New York Stadium on Thursday, where Italy beat Belgium 2-1 with some of the Italian players coming across at the end of the game to celebrate with the young spectators.

Chris Wood, primary sports co-ordinator at both schools, who organised the trip, said: “We were actually able to take 40 children from both schools after winning tickets and transport through a competition run by the FA, as well as some other prizes including World Cup programmes and sticker books.”

Nic Thorpe, executive head teacher at both schools, added: “The trip was a fantastic experience for the year six children and a brilliant way for them to celebrate all their hard work after sitting their SATs papers earlier this week.”
