A CUDWORTH school has been rated good by Ofsted.

Inspectors from the education watchdog visited Churchfield Primary on Snydale Road last month to carry out an assessment - the first the school has had since October 2013.

They praised the school’s leadership, its children’s achievements and safeguarding.

Lead inspector Eve Morris’s report said: “The leadership team has maintained the good quality of education in the school since the last inspection.

“It is a happy and lively place, where pupils feel safe and are well cared for. Pupils are nurtured through a very strong pastoral team that many parents and carers say goes ‘above and beyond’ - as a result, they have positive attitudes to learning.

“The leadership teams knows the strengths and weaknesses of the school and has demonstrated the capacity to make rapid improvements.

“The school has successfully addressed the areas for improvement from the last inspection. Children in the early years make strong starts, they achieve well through carefully planned learning activities that inspire and motivate and it promotes children’s love of learning.”

The inspection had four main lines of enquiry - reading, disadvantaged pupils’ progress, leadership and pupils with special needs - and each were praised.

“Firstly, I looked at attainment and progress of pupils in reading because, for the past two years, key stage two progress has been in the bottom 20 per cent of schools nationally.

“Reading is a high priority in school and the reading stamina of pupils has increased significantly as they report that they enjoy reading for long periods of time.

“Disadvantaged pupils are supported effectively and are achieving well as leaders have worked hard to ensure that teaching meets pupils’ needs. This was seen in all year groups.”

It’s the latest good news for the school, whose extension recently won at the South Yorkshire and Humber Building Excellence Awards.

A spokesman from Churchfield said: “Once again we’d like to say thank you to all parents for their incredible support. We have already got some great ideas on how to improve and continue to provide every opportunity possible for our pupils to achieve.”
