A SCHOOL in Barnsley is taking a stand against school gate traffic by asking parents to pledge to park a five-minute walk away.

Parents at Tankersley St Peter’s Primary are being asked to ‘park and stride’ to reduce the number of cars at the school gate.

Rebecca Lack, road safety co-ordinator and chairman of Friends of Tankersley parents group, said the pledge is a good compromise for busy parents, to incorporate sustainable travel into their school routines.

She said: “At Tankersley, we are creating a new path for our pupils; a safe and active one.

“Please help our pupils to keep safe, on their journey to school. Choose to park five minutes away and display your parking pledge.”

David Atherton, active travel officer for South Yorkshire STARS in Barnsley, has supported the school in their campaign to tackle road safety.

South Yorkshire STARS is part of PWLC Projects, a company which delivers projects in sustainable transport for schools across South Yorkshire.

David said: “Tankersley ran a competition to design a badge which parents can display in their cars and sign a pledge to park a little bit further away alleviating parking problems and safer at school cycle.

“This is a common issue at a lot of schools in Barnsley. Part of my job is to get schools to promote safety and fitness when it comes to school travel.

“If any other school wants to get involved they can e-mail me at david@PWLCprojects.com.”
