THE long summer school break looks set to stay in Barnsley - at least for another three years.

Barnsley Council cabinet members are expected to approve a recommendation to carry on with the traditional six week break for the 2018/19 academic year when they meet on Wednesday.

The decision follows additional consultation on proposals for the changes, which ran for six weeks during November and December.

The three options considered as part of that consultation were for pupils to have two weeks off in October and a five week break in summer; keeping the long summer break; or having a fixed break at Easter.

More than 2,300 people responded to the online consultation and of these 55.29 per cent were in favour of keeping things as they are, 33.45 per cent opted for the shorter summer break and two off weeks in October. Only 11.27 per cent wanted to see a fixed break at Easter.
