A SCHOOL where asbestos was revealed after flood damage will remain closed until after Christmas, the council says.

More than 220 pupils at Worsbrough Bank End Primary had been due to return from their summer holidays in September when they learned their school would not be reopening.

They had their holiday extended by more than a week before moving into temporary buildings, and at other schools Barnsley Academy, and the Sunnybank Children's Centre.

The total cost of repairs and alternative arrangements are estimated at £300,000, but the council says insurance is covering the bill.

Initially the council said the school would be closed for 'at least two months' but the current estimate is that school will not return to normal until January 5.

There is no change to the school time-table - the children are still being educated in alternative accommodation and will return to school on Monday as normal.
