A GRIMETHORPE school has welcomed its new arrivals - two alpacas.

Named Clarence and Jake, the pair are the latest additions to Milefield Primary’s on-site farm, which was set up last year in conjunction with Voluntary Action Barnsley and the North East Area Council.

The groups worked together, along with local businesses and volunteers, to also convert a derelict former caretaker’s bungalow in the school grounds into a new external community learning space.

Theresa Clarke, project manager at Milefield, said: “The community farm is already home to donkeys, chickens, pigs, goats and sheep as well as allotments to grow fresh fruit and vegetables.

“The alpacas’ wool will be used for knitting sessions for the community and textile lessons for children. They’re proving to be very popular additions and the children love coming to see them.”
