OVER Christmas two kind-hearted sisters used their pocket money to help pay for a food donation to a local soup kitchen.

Brooke Alcock, 14, and sister Reagan Goodlad, six, of Newland Road, New Lodge, donated food, toiletries and winter clothing to the Barnsley Churches Drop in Project (BCDP).

BCDP, based at Temperance House, Pitt Street, has been dedicated to helping Barnsley’s homeless since 2002 and they run a food kitchen three times a week.

The project is reliant on donations to keep providing aid to those in need and since 2014, the charity has seen a sharp increase in the amount of homelessness in Barnsley which Caroline Hyde, BCDP co-ordinator, attributes to government cuts.

The girls spent five weeks leading up to Christmas collecting food to donate after Brooke and Reagan were heartbroken to learn that people were without a place to sleep and without food over Christmas.

Brooke said: “It’s awful to see people hungry and cold and I really wanted to do something to help.”

Their willingness to help the community hasn’t gone unnoticed, and the sisters have been nominated for a Young Champions award under the Young Community Hero category.

Their mum Stacey Goodlad said: “I am so proud of them and it’s wonderful to see how big their hearts are and how much they’re willing to help.

“The girls donated more food just after Christmas and they are putting their heads together to see what other charities and causes they can help.

“The girls are selfless and I am over the moon they have been nominated, they’re ecstatic.”
