ESSENTIAL electrical work at Barnsley Town Hall is set to cost the council £100,000 - just six years after a multi-amillion pound refurbishment.

According to a report, which outlines the council’s planned maintenance costs for 2019/20, the venue requires ‘urgent’ work to ensure it’s compliant for insurance purposes.

It comes after extensive refurbishment work ahead of Experience Barnsley opening in 2013.

A council spokesman said: “Over the last five years there have been ongoing electrical works in the town hall. The latest annual check shows that are still areas that require maintenance to remain compliant for insurance purposes.”

Ruling cabinet members approved the maintenance schedule on Wednesday, which also includes £70,000 to boost security at the Digital Media Centre; £220,000 at the council’s Smithies depot for electrical work, an upgrade of facilities and new gates; a replacement floor at a cost of £200,000 at Grange Lane’s waste transfer station and replacement boilers at Royston Leisure Centre and Elsecar Heritage Centre.
