A SHOP assistant has retired after an armed robbery in the shop where she worked.

A man entered the convenience store on Lorne Road, Thurnscoe, just before 2pm last Friday.

A member of staff at the shop, who did not wish to be named, said an elderly woman had been working at the time.

"She has since packed in work and retired because it frightened her to death."

Mitch Parker, 23, of Briton Square, Thurnscoe, appeared before Barnsley magistrates yesterday charged with robbery, possession of an imitation firearm and possession of cannabis.

He was remanded in custody and sent to Sheffield Crown Court where he will make appear on August 21.
