The Reds suffered their sixth successive away defeat in the league as they were beaten 2-0 at promotion-chasing Swindon Town on Saturday.

The high-flying home team took the lead after 14 minutes then dominated but were thwarted by Barnsley goalkeeper Ross Turnbull who kept out a penalty and several other efforts before spilling a simple shot into his net late on.

The loss took Barnsley down two places to 15th in the League One table. They remain seven points above the relegation zone but the gap from the top six has grown by a point to five.

Barnsley were dealt further blows as star striker Sam Winnall had to be replaced on the bench by Luke Berry after feeling a slight 'tweak' in his hamstring while captain Martin Cranie came off at half-time with a hip problem.

Former Swindon manager Danny Wilson made two changes to his Reds side as he dropped top-scorer Conor Hourihane, for the first time this season, and Kane Hemmings who scored the winner against Oldham on Tuesday.

In came Paul Digby, who joined Ben Pearson and Josh Scowen in a midfield three, and George Smith who played on the left of midfield with Milan Lalkovic on the right and George Waring on his own up front.

Swindon took the lead on 14 minutes when, following a short corner, John Swift was allowed to dribble past Smith and Digby on the by-line in the Reds box and before his cross was deflected to Raphael Rossi-Branco who fired into the bottom right corner.

Barnsley's only shot of the first half was from Lalkovic who cut in from the right and fired an effort straight at home stopper Wes Foderingham.

The Robins should have doubled their lead on 39 minutes after Digby felled Swift in the area but Turnbull threw himself to his right to turn Andy Williams' weak spot-kick around the post.

Turnbull made another good save from Nathan Byrne in first half injury-time but, from the resulting corner, was rooted to the spot as Jordan Turnbull put a brilliant headed chance wide.

Wilson made changes after a terrible first half performance as Hourihane and Dale Jennings coming on for Digby and the injured Martin Cranie with Smith moving to right-back.

Williams beat the offside trap midway through the second half and went clean through but Turnbull denied him again with a good block to put the ball wide of the left post.

William was then replaced by Michael Smith who latched onto a loose pass by Jean Yves M'voto but fired over from the edge of the box.

Barnsley finally had a good chance on 78 minutes when Foderingham's miskick left them with a four-on-one but substitute Alex Kiwomya chose to pass instead of shoot and Rossi-Branco got in front of Hourihane to intercept.

Foderingham made amends with a brilliant save from the following corner before Peter Ramage put the second effort wide. The visitors were made to pay when Turnbull fumbled Robins substitute Ben Gladwin's powerful 20-yard shot into his net with five minutes left.
