Sixty Barnsley fans began their journey to Derby County's Pride Park at 9am today.

The organisers of West Stand Bogs, the Reds fanzine, are hoping to take the amount they have raised for charity to £50,000 with a 55-mile walk from Oakwell to the East Midlands ground. They are aiming to raise £10,000 for suicide-prevention charity CALM, the Campaign Against Living Miserably, in memory of former Barnsley RUFC player Ashley Salkeld.

WSB's Liam Dyson said: "We originally wanted to raise £2,000 but we did that in two weeks so we changed our target to £10,000. We are halfway there and hopefully the walk will inspire people to donate.

"I lost a family friend in October last year.  We have raised money for different charities and we picked this one because it means a lot to us.  Suicide is the biggest killer of men aged 25 to 40 in this country and rates are especially high in Yorkshire.  We're raising awareness of that and money to help CALM."

The walkers left Oakwell at 9am today and are planning to walk until 7pm when they will stop in Chesterfield before starting again at 3.30am and walking down to Derby for the 3pm kick-off.

Liam, who has organised walks to games at Chesterfield and Bradford in the past, said: "It's twice as long as any of the walks we have done before, and the first one that is over two days.  It's the biggest one we have done in terms of distance and also people taking part because we've got 60 doing it which is a great number."

WSB donates the money raised from the fanzine as well as fund-raising events to various local charities. They are organising a 20th anniversary dinner for the Reds' 1996/97 promotion team on June 24 which is almost sold out.
