THE public artwork to remember the brave Barnsley soldiers who fell in the Battle of the Somme has won a national award.

Light Lines by artists, musson+retallick, commissioned by Barnsley Council as part of its Somme centenary commemorations, was on display in front of the town hall from July 1 until Remembrance Sunday to reflect the length of the battle in which more than 800 Barnsley men were killed.

It has now been selected as one of only 45 national and international winners in the National Civic Trust Awards and will find out in March whether it will receive an award or commendation at a special ceremony held at the Guildhall Winchester.

The national panel for the awards said Light Lines - the only piece of artwork outside of London to be nominated - was ‘beautiful, poignant and absolutely relevant’.
