EVENTS will be held across Barnsley to commemorate the darkest day in the town’s military history when 300 local men were killed in battle on the same day.

July 1 1916 was the first day - and bloodiest day - of the Battle of the Somme.

About 300 Barnsley men alone were thought to have died on that first day. By the end of the month that figure had risen to 500 and by the end of the battle it had reached 800.

On Friday July 1 this year - three weeks today - the Chronicle is planning a special commemorative issue dedicated to all those who died on that day 100 years ago. It will feature the names of all the fallen who have been identified as having been born in, or having lived in Barnsley.
