THE ACADEMY which runs a special measures school in the Dearne is confident it has ‘turned a corner’ after a recent Ofsted report.

A spokesman for Astrea Academy Trust, which runs The Hill Primary Academy on Tudor Street in Thurnscoe, said they were pleased with the monitoring report.

The report said the school’s leaders and managers are taking effective action towards the removal of special measures and recommended it does not appoint any newly qualified teachers before the next inspection.

The school was placed in special measures after a report carried out in December 2016.

An Astrea spokeswoman said: “We are very pleased that Ofsted acknowledges the tremendous level of hard work put in over the last 12 months and the progress that has been made. There is more to be done, but we are determined that The Hill continues to improve so that our children and community get the education they deserve.

“New staff are now in place and having a positive impact, with students making much better progress. In Early Years, our results are now in line with the national standard and our phonics results are improving.

“Our push on attendance has made a real difference to both attendance and punctuality.

“Overall, behaviour has improved significantly, with fewer incidents, with children absolutely clear about who to talk to if they have any worries or concerns.

“We have a great partnership in place with Highgate Primary, and we are delighted that Jo Leishman has been appointed as executive principal to support us through this next phase of our development.

“We feel confident that The Hill has really turned a corner and we are excited about the future for our pupils, staff and the wider community.”
