A YOUNG judo player from Barnsley had the honour of running with the Special Olympics torch as it made its way through Barnsley town centre.

Kai Barnett, ten, from Spark Lane at Mapplewell, is competing in the summer games which got underway in Sheffield this week following the opening ceremony at Bramall Lane stadium on Tuesday.

Kai, who has autism, joined the torch-carrying runners as they ran from the town hall to the markets area last Friday to mark the multi-sport disability event coming to South Yorkshire.

The sun was shining as the torch was welcomed to Barnsley by mayor elect Coun Steve Green and senior police officers including Chief Inspector Mark James and Sgt Matt Wood from the town centre policing team, and Kai’s family and friends.
